How we research & choose
The Kitchen Gear Lab exists to answer one question well: which kitchen gear should you actually buy? There are thousands of woks, knives and espresso machines, and most "best of" lists are thin. We go deeper, and we show our work.
Our method
Every pick is sourced from independent expert testing (Serious Eats, America's Test Kitchen, Wirecutter and other established test kitchens) cross-checked against manufacturer specifications. We do not accept payment for placement; we earn a commission only when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you.
- We start with published independent testing. We analyze attributed hands-on reviews and measurements from established test kitchens such as Serious Eats, America's Test Kitchen, Wirecutter, Consumer Reports.
- We verify the specs. Materials, dimensions, wattage, capacity and warranty terms are checked against the manufacturer's own listing before a product makes a guide.
- We score against fixed criteria. Every guide publishes the exact criteria it used, so you can disagree with the weighting and still use the data.
- We attribute our claims. Pros, cons and awards link back to the source that made them. We do not invent first-hand testing we did not do.
How we stay independent

Who writes this
Guides are produced by the The Kitchen Gear Lab Test Desk. We read the lab tests so you don't have to. Our editors compare independent expert reviews, verified product specifications and aggregated owner feedback to build buying guides you can act on — in plain English.
